Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is seeking a videographer and video editor(s) who can create a few short film projects to help us in our marketing and recruitment endeavors.

MCC is an AmeriCorps program that provides opportunities for people to get outdoors and contribute to the greater good. Our mission is to accomplish conservation initiatives that inspire people and enhance communities, and that's what we've been doing since our establishment in 1983.

Every year, we place almost 100 individuals throughout the entire state of Maine to conserve and protect our natural resources. They participate in trail maintenance and erosion control, water quality and wildlife monitoring, invasive plant removal, outdoor education and outreach, and so much more.

In addition, we provide people with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills, gain confidence, and become lifelong advocates of the environment.

We need your help to spread the word about the awesome things we are getting done!

Responsibilities

Produce short marketing videos 30, 60, or 90 seconds in length
Ensure our key messages and goals are incorporated into the videos
Possession of necessary film equipment, including camera, editing software, lighting, or sound equipment
Travel with or without an MCC staff person to project sites to get footage of members and projects
Edit footage and collaborate with MCC staff to create the final product
Input music, dialogues, graphics, and effects
Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running
Collect appropriate consent from persons interviewed, photographed, etc.
Ensure final products are accessible (e.g., audio descriptions, closed captions, etc.)
Receive express written consent from MCC before disseminating products
Check-in regularly with MCC staff for updates and communicate any needs through email or face-to-face meetings

Qualifications

Professional or personal experience in video production: filming, image, and sound editing (samples of past work would be very appreciated)
Professional, energetic, creative, and self-motivated
Effective communicator and troubleshooter
Ability to make decisions and follow through with minimal supervision
Ability to follow through and meet deadlines and possess a strong sense of responsibility

Chapter 17 - Reestablishment of Commission Jurisdiction Highland Plantation

The Maine Land Use Planning Commission is proposing rules to reestablish land use regulatory authority in Highland Plantation. On April 26, 2025, at an annual meeting of the plantation, Highland Plantation voted to repeal its comprehensive plan and land use ordinance. Pursuant to 12 M.R.S. 685-A(4-A)(B)(1), the Maine Land Use Planning Commission is required to reestablish its jurisdiction (land use regulatory authority and responsibility) over Highland Plantation. In order to provide time to prepare and seek community feedback on an updated Land Use Guidance Map for Highland Plantation, this rulemaking also proposes to adopt the Land Use Guidance Map for Highland Plantation that was in effect prior to the 2016 transfer of authority. This rulemaking also includes other clerical edits, including but not limited to revision of the rule title, updating of statutory citations, and minor rule format changes.

Ash Tree Woodland Walk - Union

Join Georges River Land Trust, Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District, and Maine Forest Service for an ash tree focused woodland walk. Maine Forest Service District Forester Allyssa Gregory will provide instructions on identifying ash species. Maine Forest Service Entomologist Colleen Teerling will present ways to identify emerald ash borer, management strategies for ash forests, and treatment options. Woodland stewards and appreciators should leave with a knowledge of Maine's ash species trees, practical tree identification skills, an understanding of emerald ash borer, treatments, and insights into stewarding a healthy ash forest. Please come prepared for a mile hike. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring your insect repellent of choice. Join us for a woodland walk!

Directions & Parking: From Route 17 in Union, travel one mile north on Sennebec Road to a dirt road on the left (see map). Drive down the dirt road to its end and park beyond the entrance to the driveway into the small gravel pit. At times, the dirt road is chained, so please park on the shoulder there and walk down the dirt road to the property.

Do's: Prepare to be outside, which means black fly & tick precautions. Bring a folding chair if you want to sit. Don'ts: Leave those bars of soap at home and please leave your phone in your car. Ranger Lori, a retired educator and lifelong outdoor enthusiast will facilitate this program.

Adopt a Tree at Range Pond State Park

In this activity, families will "adopt" a tree at the park, deepening their awareness of individual trees over time and encouraging a greater understanding and appreciation of their local environment. On your next trip to the Park, visit your tree and write down how the tree looks, feels, and smells to describe how your tree is changing. Ranger Lori, a retired educator and lifelong outdoor enthusiast will facilitate this one hour program. Printed Adoption Certificates and Tree Journal pages will be provided.

Meet at 2:45 at the flagpole near the park bath-houses. Children attending programs must be accompanied by an adult. Program may be canceled due to continuous precipitation, or lightning in the area.

North Haven Invasive Plant Management Walk

Join North Haven Conservation Partners, Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District, Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Forest Service, & Water, Earth, Birds, & Bugs (WEBB) for an invasive plant management workshop. North Haven Conservation Partners will lead us through North Shore Preserve. The 31-acre preserve is predominantly spruce-alder with a strong buckthorn presence. Maine Natural Areas Program will provide instruction on invasive plant identification and treatment options. Maine Forest Service and Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District will discuss relevant resources and programs. WEBB will share ways North Haven residents can participate in invasive plant control measures on the island.

All are welcome!

Please come prepared for a hike. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes, sun protection, and bring your insect repellent of choice.

Tree Talks pairs local community projects and history with tree identification. Join us July 11th for a tour of Merryspring Nature Center in beautiful Camden, Maine. Merryspring Nature Center is a 66 acre sanctuary and former site of a Revolutionary War encampment. Program director John Fromer will provide a history of Merryspring and an overview of current projects. District Forester Allyssa Gregory will host tree id and introduce the Tree Farm program. Participants should leave with a basic understanding of past land use, and past land use indicators in New England and native tree identification skills. Come and visit the rough-and-tumble world of 17th-century Maine. Historic interpreters attired in period dress will introduce visitors to the English cod fishery, trade with the Wabanaki and French, and shipbuilding, coopering, and blacksmithing as practiced in early Maine. This interactive experience also explores the English forts and troops of mid-coast Maine, and food and drink on the Eastern frontier. Saturday, July 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free with your paid park admission.

Public Comment for Chapter 2 and 10: Miscellaneous Revisions

The Maine Land Use Planning Commission is proposing miscellaneous revisions to Chapter 2 and Chapter 10. The proposed revisions include replacing an existing definition of "campsite" with minor campground in Chapter 2 to align with recent statutory changes, and creation of a new definition of campsite to maintain continuity with the Commission's other existing rules. The proposed revisions would also change the deadline for filing a development permit following establishment of a Planned Development (D-PD) or Planned Recreational Facility Development (D-PR) subdistrict from 18 months to 5 years to allow for better planning outcomes. Three documents incorporated by reference would be updated to more recent available versions, and the rule changes would clarify how the public can access these documents. Other proposed changes would improve rule alignment with other recent changes to the LUPC statute and rules, and would improve formatting, consistency, clarity, and readability. All proposed revisions are routine in nature.

The primary objectives of this rulemaking are to clarify definitions for solar energy generation facilities, define battery energy storage system facilities, specify which Land Use subdistricts will allow battery energy storage system facilities, add an additional subdistrict that will allow small scale solar energy generation facilities, introduce standards for solar energy generation facilities and battery energy storage system facilities, and introduce standards for decommissioning these facilities.
