Award Description: The Recovery STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant is for initiatives to reduce crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. The STOP (Services, Training, Officers and Prosecution) Program supports communities in their efforts to develop and strengthen effective law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women and to develop and strengthen victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women. Violence against women crimes include sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
Project Name: Recovery STOP Violence Against Women Recovery Formula Grant for the State of Maine
Quarterly Activities Description: During the quarter ending March 31, 2012, two new awards were made. The United Somali Women of Maine were awarded funds to sustain two part time positions to provide domestic violence advocacy services to refugee and immigrant women in the Portland and Lewiston areas. These cities have experienced an influx of refugee and immigrants in recent years. Culturally appropriate advocacy services were provided that consisted of court accompaniment, safety planning, outreach services, referral for legal services, housing, services for obtaining benefits, follow up with victims, referral to other service providers and ensuring that victims receive what they need in order for them and their children to be SAFE. Training was also to service providers and education for the refugee and immigrant communities on service and resources available for victims of domestic and sexual violence. The Maine State Police received an award to provide domestic violence homicide training to law enforcement officers and that training is scheduled for Fall 2012.
