Award Description: ELC-ARRA HAI - Strengthening the Evidence Base, Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) for Infectious Diseases: Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI)-Building and Sustaining State Programs to Prevent HAIs. This award will fund the development of a comprehensive State plan to prevent HAIs, in coordination with community partners to develop the plan and monitor its execution.
Project Name: ELC - ARRA HAI
Quarterly Activities Description: The HAI program has assisted in a hospital C. difficile outbreak, a hospital surgical site infection outbreak, and several nursing home C. difficile outbreaks. We have used the newly developed pulsed field gel electrophoresis test to link C. difficile cases. We are harvesting and analyzing National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data from all 36 hospitals. We have developed draft protocol for NHSN validation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) and C. difficile-HAI. We are meeting monthly with the Maine Infection Prevention Collaborative and separately with their Coordinating Council. We hosted 2 seminars for long term care facilities, one in Brewer and another in Portland. This is done in collaboration with the Northeast Healthcare Quality Foundation. We have provided educational opportunities to all infection preventions in acute care hospitals in Maine. We have completed 2 rounds of external observations of hand hygiene compliance of all acute care hospitals in Maine and are sending the results to the facility CEO. We are providing education on the new developments in the treatment of C. difficile, along with education on the prevention of transmission, and new tools to assist in the analysis of transmission in outbreaks.
